Mordant printing workshop

Creating designs on cloth with natural dyes

Saturday + Sunday | October 4+ 5, 2025

Create your own pattern and make a beautiful printed and dyed bandana:

Day 1: Learn how to prepare your fabric for natural dyeing and printing, create mordant pastes, and apply them to fabric using blocks and paintbrushes.

Day 2: We’ll rinse our pieces, “fix” the mordants onto the fabric, prepare several dye baths, and then dye our pieces in the various plant dyes to reveal our colorful results!

You’ll go home with a full set of instructions on how to create vibrant prints on your own + your cotton bandana + samples from each dye vat.

All are welcome – no previous dye or textile experience is needed.

$225 all materials included. Email me with questions or to sign up!

Mordant printing is an ancient and versatile technique for producing patterns and designs on fabric with natural dyes. Thickened mordant pastes are applied to the fabric, and when the pieces are introduced to the dye bath, colors from the plant dyes come out in various hues and shades on the cloth.

In this two-day workshop, we’ll go over basic natural dye techniques for whole piece dyeing. We’ll experiment with several plant dyes during our dive into the fascinating process of printing patterns onto cloth.

I’ll talk through the steps of preparing fabric for dyeing and printing. Together we’ll create thickened mordant pastes and apply them to fabric using blocks and/or paint brushes, as well as making our own blocks for printing.

Held during Maine Craft Weekend at Pumpkin Vine Family Farm in South Somerville.

Saturday + Sunday from 10 am – 2 pm.

The class size will be small, and spots are limited. Get in touch if you’d like to join us.

Class size was perfect, location stunning, loved each student having their own table… that was especially helpful. You provided just the right amount of information to get us started and then trusted us to use that information to do what we envisioned…”
